The Next Level

Good morning to you. I believe you had a good weekend, well I did (in case you wanted to know) really busy but good. 

I’d like to share something with you today that I’ve noticed for some time now.  There seems to be a shift happening in different organisations. I do not know if it has to do with it being the last months of the year (i.e. tidying things up before the year ends) or not but whatever the case is, I can sense a shift and a need for change, happening in various organisations. A yearning for something more (from the leaders and team members) and a readiness and willingness from the leaders to take their team to the next level.

In the midst of all this, there is also something some leaders are faced with: Drought and a season of Nothingness.

Nothingness: No bad, no good, no wrong, no right, downright pettiness……just nothing.

The drought could be a decline in commitment, enthusiasm, growth, development, etc of team members or employees. It could even be a decrease in the number of your team members and/or employees as a result of relocation, retirement, new births, losses, incompetence or plain old “I’ve had enough of this job”. Whatever the case may be, realize that people will always come and go, some with valid reasons and others with not so valid reasons. 

As a leader experiencing this season, this is the time for a restructuring, a time to implement new things, a time for a reinvention. Not a time to sit and wallow and yank your hair out unproductively, but a time to take stock of the journey so far and do something to make the journey ahead productive.

The simple solution is a change: a change in the way things are done, a change in expectations and above all a change in  attitudes and perceptions (both team members/employees and leaders). Change is one thing that is bound to happen whether we want it to or not, we may not like it or even respond well to it but that will not stop it from occurring.

If you need to hire professional help for this (which I strongly advice) then do so because an outside perspective might be all you need, more so if its from a professional. 

Below are some steps to follow, to turn your drought and nothingness to productivity and abundance:

1. Review the (organisation/team) mission

2. Revisit the vision

3. Identify where your team/organisation is at the moment

4. Identify what the next level is and what needs to be done to get to the next level

5. Review the policies, procedures, rules, regulations and adjust them accordingly to fit with the updated mission and vision

6. Make provision for continuous development for yourself and your team 

7. Have a structure in place for how your organisation/team should function

7. Seek ongoing support and help from a mentor, coach, consultant, etc

8. Implement the changes by communicating it to your team effectively 

Theses are the basic steps you should follow to implement changes. Ask for help and support if you need it and remember when it seems like everyone is walking away and nothing seems to be happening, that is the time to implement change. Those who have remained are there because there is still some passion and loyalty left, work with what you have, it might seem not enough but trust me, its just enough to get you to the next level.

Get in line with your mission

As a leader, your ultimate mission is to lead. That is a simple definition of what your ‘assignment’, ‘calling’ or mission is: to lead. One of the principal things you need all through your leadership journey is undoubtedly courage. Courage to start your journey,  courage to see your mistakes as an opportunity for growth and the courage to not give up when you have done all you know to do and things aren’t just going the way you want them. Courage is one thing you cannot do without as a leader, it’s the ‘steroid’ you need to keep you going (I’ll talk more in detail about courage in a future blog).

In order to get in line with your mission:

1. You have to work from where you are with what you have.

2. Do not eliminate yourself from opportunities because of a limitation.

3. Do not wait for your situation to line up with your mission because you might never get anything accomplished.

The 4 C’s that get you aligned with your mission:

1. Confidence: confidence is absolutely important for leadership. It is the first, middle and ongoing characteristic a leader should possess. ”Confidence is the soil upon which your tree of leadership is planted” – Me.

2. Contentment: you need to be content with where you are and what you have. Do not weigh yourself down by wishing you had someone else’s resources. It wastes time, It’s not productive, it encourages self-pity and it leaves you angry and bitter. If you have the  means to update yourself or get some resources then do so. If you don’t, then start from where you are. Don’t give the excuse of you not having what ‘A’ or ‘B’ has, that excuse will come back later to bite you in the rear.

3. Courage: courage takes discipline and sacrifice (two key words that we seem to have thrown out the window). You also need to say the right things while exhibiting courage, this is where positive self-talk and affirmations come into play. However without action and discipline, your positive self-talk will only be a feel good motion with zero results.

4. Concentration/Focus: focus produces energy. It builds strength and belief in your mission. It is necessary for direction and it guides your action. Focus drives you and lines up your thoughts and actions so that your mission is  fulfilled.

True and radical leaders work from where they are and are not intimidated by their present situation, state or condition. Instead, they make the situation better because of the way they move. The choice to be confident, content, courageous and focused is what makes this possible (i.e. the situation better). It is that choice that opens your eyes to opportunities and gives you the strength (mental and physical) to convert opportunities to success stories.

I tweeted this yesterday and thought I should share it on my blog today and explain it a bit more. This is particularly useful for those who are organisational and team leaders.  The ‘level’ referred to here is not just one act, it is a position where one acts from.

It is important as leaders to be sensitive to the different levels at which those we lead are at. One of the priorities for ‘promotion’ should be the ability of a person to follow instructions. A person who follows instructions is wise and he/she will definitely get great results (this applies to both leaders and team members). In order to create a team/organisational culture where success can consistently thrive, it is important for you to be mindful of this.

My take on Leadership

Leadership in my opinion is based upon the principle of being and doing. I truly do believe that in order to become an effective and influential leader, one has to be prepared and willing to ‘be’ so that their ‘doing’ produces results.

Leadership is a choice, just as most things in life. It is not a role you decide to practice in your spare time, an item of clothing you put on and take off at will, or a short cut to a successful life. I believe leadership is a truly humbling process, one that reveals who you really are. You do not have to be a corporate executive to be a leader, we operate in various leadership roles in our everyday lives as spouses, parents, business owners and team/group leaders. In my opinion, every person has an opportunity to exercise leadership in some form, whether over someone else or over your own self.

Leadership is a journey: the skills learnt, the mistakes made, the test of character, the courage, the techniques, the experience; these are all what makes one, a seasoned and great leader. It is the process of ‘being’ and then ‘doing’ that defines leadership for me.
